Scottish Gaelic Dictionaries

Now also available: Scottish Gaelic / English and English / Scottish Gaelic dictionaries for Amazon Kindle

Having the same content as the previously published Scottish Gaelic / German dictionaries, now English speakers have for the first time the chance to look up Scottish Gaelic words on their Kindle together with information how to pronounce the headwords. Pronunciation is given in the standard International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA).

With nearly 7000 headwords and phrases in the Gaelic to English and more than 4000 headwords and phrases in the English to Gaelic volume, the two dictionaries cover a basic dictionary, which doesn’t contain every word but enough material for beginners of the language.

For many headwords, the most common phrases and usages are given, to make clear how the word is used in context. For Scottish Gaelic nouns, plural and genitive forms are noted; for verbs also the verbal nouns; for adjectives the irregular comparative/superlative forms and for pronouns the forms for all persons (if applicable).

For the first time, these Gaelic dictionaries provide pronunciation information for both directions.

Another feature makes these new dictionaries unique: they are e-books that can be read on an Amazon Kindle, on a PC, Mac, iPhone, iPad and on Android smartphones and words can be looked up quickly with the integrated search function – no tedious leafing through a book to find a word! For all platforms, Amazon offers a reader program.

Since there is no copy protection (DRM), the dictionaries can be read on any number of devices at the same time and they are future proof should the DRM system cease to work at any point.

There is also a special version for older PDAs (e.g. Palm Pilot or Sony Clié), which can run older e-book reader Mobipocket software. This can be purchased through the author (follow the “About” link for the e-mail address). This version is free with a purchased Kindle version.

If you just want to have a look at a sample, this can be downloaded via the various Kindle devices or free apps.
